Hokusai Wave with Magnificent Butterfly

Katsushika Hokusai was a Japanese artist who lived from 1760–1849.  One of his woodcut prints known as The Great Wave inspired me to use that same wave, but instead of Mount Fuji in the middle, I put a little butterfly.  I also made the background monochromatic with an approaching storm.

HOKUSAI WAVE WITH MAGNIFICENT BUTTERFLY is dedicated to everyone who is going through a dark storm. I hope you are encouraged to not give up ... keep fighting.... lean in, and don't run away. May we all grow stronger through the challenges that stand in our way.

There's More To Cactus Than You Might Think
Cactus, or as they are called in plural - cacti,
are survivors.  In fact, the house we moved to has an old deck area. And on top of the hot roof there is a giant cactus! At some point it's roots were able to find a small crevice in a single shingle, and that was enough to survive, and thrive.

Cactus are strong, and can adapt to the most extreme conditions. Yet, when little Mikey's baseball team is trying to come up with a good name you won't often hear Cacti as an option. Longhorns, Lions, and Bears sound so much better. And can you imagine what the cactus mascot costume would look like? How do you take a picture with that? But still, Cacti would have my vote.

I like their toughness. In the middle of deserts and droughts, when everything else is dead, the cactus finds a way flourish. In the most difficult times it still blooms. That kind of grit inspires me.

So here's a thought for the day:  When the droughts of life come your way... and they will, be more like cactus!

Corpus Cactus, 2017
I was taking a photograph of the Corpus Christi bay (for the I Love Series). As I was climbing back up the cove, I saw the hillside filled with cactus. I found it fascinating for many reasons, but the most compelling was that it seemed so out of place next to this huge body of water. I'm used to seeing cactus in the dry fields of South Texas.

Blue Prickly Pear, 2017
Blue gets a bad rap.  When a person is discouraged someone might say, "Why are you so blue?"  But I find the color uplifting.  The more I look at it the better it makes me feel.  That's why Blue Prickly Pear is  4 feet by 4 feet (though you can get different sizes as an unsigned print).  I wanted the viewer to be engulfed by blue and hopefully find encouragement every time they look at it.
